The Annual Retreat of the Korean Church

By Pastor Eunjoo Yi

Churches in Korea traditionally have Annual Spiritual Retreats. This August the Korean Congregation held its first Spiritual Retreat with prayers, praise and messages at 6am and again at 6:30pm led by guest speaker, Yong Chai. We had an average attendance of 20 people at each session.

Yong Chai, serves a Korean Presbyterian church near Chicago, Illinois. Like many Koreans, he believes in Fasting Prayers and has participated in Forty Days of Fasting Prayers four times in his life. He has read the Bible 300 times and knows most of the verses by heart. When he offers up prayers, he always gives people some Bible verses to read. People with emotional, physical, and spiritual hurts have experienced healing. Before coming to Pueblo for our retreat, Pastor Chai and his wife fasted two meals for forty days.

I would like to share a story of spiritual healing to a 68-year-old Korean woman who attended the retreat. She was very sick in her teenage years. The doctors did not discover what was wrong with her. She met a shaman (priest) who told her of the power from a god. He wanted her to become a shaman in order to be healed, otherwise she would have died. She went to live in a Buddhist temple for ten years. I do not know when, but someone evangelized to her and she got to know Jesus.

The past 30 years she has been living in Pueblo. She wanted to come to church but regretfully every time she came on Sundays, she felt restless during the worship service and became sick, so she would not come. I would visit her at her home where we would have a meaningful devotion time together.)

The first night of our Retreat lasted more than three hours. Pastor Chai and I prayed for her on the first night. The following morning at Early Morning Prayer Service she testified of God's spiritual healing. She still had some nervous moments following the Prayer Service and felt that she would again be sick. When she arrived home, grabbing the doorknob to enter her home she heard loud and clear beautiful music sung by a big choir. She thought this to be weird so she began to look around her home, but no one was there. Even though it was weird she felt a peace. That night she experienced peace that she had never experienced before. The following morning she said "God sent me angels and gave me peace! Now I am free from the devil." She was at peace and attended every session of the Retreat and has continued to come to church every Sunday. She says "God healed me!"

In our church I pray and believe God's healing will continue to occur. As we continue to pray and invite people to our gathering, we will experience it.

Anyone who would like to experience is invited to "40 Days of prayer and fasting" and "Healing Prayer Service is on Sunday, October 15, at 6:00 p.m. in the sanctuary".
